SAIL THROUGH HARVEST WITH ATLANTIC

When choosing oilseed rape it makes sense to spread your variety risks, and growers need look no further than Atlantic, a new offering from Nickerson which promises not only high gross output and oil content but also good disease resistance - rating seven for both stem canker and light leaf spot.

Atlantic has superior gross output of 104% over controls compared to many varieties currently on the HGCA’s Recommended List, says Nickerson’s oilseed rape breeder Dr Jo Bowman.

“This is a variety that growers need to see in their own farm situation rather than relying solely on trial results,” he adds. “Atlantic’s gross output is good and the oil content of 45.5% is one of the best; and with light leaf spot infection amongst the worse we’ve seen in a number of years its superior disease resistant will be very apparent this season.”

Atlantic is a conventional variety, and is suited for drilling UK-wide.  The variety has a combination of average maturity, early flowering and short to medium height, similar to Lioness.

“We consider Atlantic to be ideal for the many UK growers who don’t want to be swathing but would like a variety that is standing at flowering time,” says Dr Bowman. “Atlantic also offers them an easier time at harvest as its canopy is weather resistant, settling down naturally with the stems at the bottom stiff and standing, resulting in fewer losses and therefore much simpler combining.”
