Bill Angus, senior wheat breeder of plant breeders Nickerson, shows growers around trials plots at Ardenfleets Farm, Warter, near York, on Monday 11th July at an open day held by Yorkshire Arable Marketing.
Local growers were invited to Ardenfleets Farm, part of the Warter Priory Estate on the Yorkshire Wolds, on Monday (11th July) to be shown around 2.5-acres of trials plots. The trials are now in their fourth year and are being conducted by Yorkshire Arable Marketing - the Estate’s agronomists, and plant breeders Nickerson.
“The trials include 40 different varieties on both treated and untreated plots. The object is to establish each variety’s ability to compete against disease independently,” says Chris Rigley of Yorkshire Arable Marketing. Bill Angus, Nickerson’s senior wheat breeder, was also on hand to show growers around the plots, and to introduce them to one of the first commercial crops of the company’s new winter wheat Alchemy. Ardenfleets Farm is one of only four farms in the UK to be growing a crop of Alchemy this year. “The trials at Warter are all about establishing the best growing regime for the farmer in terms of optimising inputs, but they’re also about looking at supplying what local end-users want to buy,” says Mr Angus.
