Nescio maize is new NIAB control

Nescio forage maize, marketed by Nickerson, will be the new control variety for Maturity Class 5 on the NIAB Descriptive Lists from 2005.

Nescio consistently produces high yields of high quality forage from year to year - whatever the weather, and wherever it is grown across the UK. This is why it has been chosen as the benchmark against which other varieties will be measured in future.

A product of the highly successful LG breeding programme in France, Nescio is one of the highest yielding varieties a farmer can buy, with potential fresh yields of around 55t/ha (22.5t/acre). It also has good early vigour (rated 8.6) and a rating of 8.2 for standing power.

The crop produces palatable, well-balanced silage, with energy coming from the large, well-filled cobs, and soluble sugars and digestible fibre in the leaves and stem. The ME of the fresh plant at harvest is 11.5MJ/kg dry matter.

"The enormous success of LG 20.80 in the 1990's was based on its consistency through the years, and across the widest range of conditions," explains Nickerson's marketing director Frank Curtis. "Nescio combines the same high
level of consistency with vastly improved genetic performance. In the past two years it has proved its adaptability to different climatic conditions, and has performed well on farms across the UK, from Devon up to Dumfries.

"With many dairy units increasingly dependent on forage maize to maintain milk yields and quality throughout the year, reliability has to be a key consideration when deciding which forage maize to grow."
