LG 31.93, an early maturing forage maize from Nickerson, is a new entry on the 2005 Descriptive List of maize varieties, published today (1 September) by NIAB.
The seed is being produced specifically for use in this country, as trials have highlighted the variety's particular suitability to UK growing conditions. It is high yielding, averaging 16t DM/ha (6.5t DM/acre), and has been classified as Maturity Class 7, the first LG hybrid ever to be placed in this category. It is also the first LG variety to be recommended for use on less favourable sites. In common with all LG forage maize varieties LG 31.93 produces silage of a high feed value, with MEs around 11.2 and potentially high starch yields. "While we do not believe that maturity class is the be all and end all of maize variety selection, it is good to see an LG hybrid make it into Maturity Class 7," admits Nickerson maize marketing manager Peter Schofield. "LG 31.93 has all "Now even growers who only feel comfortable growing varieties from the highest maturity classes can benefit from the advances made within the LG forage maize breeding programme."
