Late Varieties

This group of varieties is suitable for use in the south and south east of the UK, where the climate is influenced by the Continent.  They are not suitable for growing on most marginal and mainstream sites.  These later maturing varieties need to be able to reach maturity with starch-rich cobs, and dry matter of 30-32% by early October.  Where this is possible, high dry matter yield is a major selection criterion. Growers looking for both yield and quality can also select for improved digestibility where high energy density is the ration goal.  The new LG variety, Atrium, benefits from improved cell wall digestibility and consequently the resultant silage has a higher energy content.  The extra 0.18 MJ/kg DM of ME associated with Atrium can generate an additional £2,700 worth of milk in a 100 cow dairy herd.  More details about Atrium are available - email (info@limagrain.co.uk)
