Maize for crimping or grain

Maize can be grown for the grains in the cobs, with harvesting taking place once the crop has dried down to 65-75% dry matter. The grains can either undergo further drying for sale into the bird food and petfood industries. Alternatively, grains can be treated with an additive to make crimped maize, a moist starch-rich feedstuff for livestock rations.

Variety selection for grain and crimping use
Maize varieties for grain and crimping need to have resistance to disease and stress, good sheath cover of the cob and the ability to remain standing while the plant dries down to a moisture content of 30-35%. Forage maize varieties may be used, but may not have the standing power required and may also suffer Fusarium infection due to the prolonged time cobs are in the field. So, it is recommended that only varieties bred for grain are used.

Yields of grain maize typically range from 8-10t/ha, at a 32% moisture content and this produces a 5-7t/ha yield of dry matter.
