Spring Oats

For many years now the UK oats crop has been around 100,000 hectares each year – compared to almost 2 million hectares of wheat. This area is split between spring oats, which are more popular in the north, and winter oats, which tend to be grown in southern and western areas.

In addition to the long established markets for oats, such as breakfast cereals, this cereal crop is now becoming more popular because of the trend towards healthier eating.

Owing to the small area occupied by oats, there are few remaining breeding programmes, but Limagrain UK are pleased to represent the varieties Ascot, Olympic and Valene from the Wiersum programme in the Netherlands.
